|Ceremony for Establishment of Fallujah Maternity and Children’s Hospital in Republic of Iraq|
On August 19th, the ceremony for completion of Fallujah Maternity and Children’s Hospital (150beds) rehabilitation project was held at the Embassy of Japan in Republic of Iraq. With strong support from Japanese government to UNDP, the old Fallujah General Hospital was converted into the Maternity and Children’s hospital. After implementing the feasibility study in 2007, ITEC made a basic design, managed the tender and supervised construction as UNDP owner’s engineer. Fallujah was the conflict place between U.S. military and anti-government protesters after Iraq war and the growth of the birth defect was feared by the weapons used at that time. With the cherished desire of the late Shinsuke Hashida, the journalist who were killed in attack in Iraq in 2004, the Hashida Memorial Mohammed Fund was founded. Taking those experiences, Fallujah Maternity and Children’s Hospital rehabilitation project became the symbolic project of the cooperation between Japan and Iraq.
H.E. Mr. Takaoka, Ambassador of Japan, H.E. Dr. Al-Mutlak, Deputy Prime Minister, H.E. Dr. Hamise, Deputy Minister of Health, and Representative of UNDP participated into the ceremony and ITEC was invited. H.E. Deputy Minister of Health expressed the appreciation to Japanese government, people from Japan and his hope for more cooperation between Iraq and Japan in health sector. In the speech, he also expressed the appreciation for contribution by ITEC to the project and talked about Mr. Yoji Ishikawa from ITEC, who made considerable efforts to build up the project.
